Programs: curriculum
The Sprouts program teaches a comprehensive nutrition and agriculture curriculum consisting of 30 standardized lessons on topics ranging from gardening, farming, nutrition, and cooking. The year is divided into four after-school program sessions:
- Fall Garden Club: Students harvest and preserve foods from the school garden and learn about sustainable agriculture. Lesson plans include: Garden Explore, Preserving the Harvest, Celebration Salsa, Seed Saving, Compost, and Growing Garlic.
- Junior Farmer Club: Students learn about Vermont agriculture and the connections between farms and the food we consume. Lesson plans include: Who made my lunch, From Moo to You, Poultry Power, Seasons of the Apple Orchard and From Sheep to Sweater.
- Junior Chef Club: Students prepare meals and snacks from scratch while learning about healthy food choices. Lesson plans include: Healthy Me, Eat a Rainbow, From Wheat to Pretzels, the Food Pyramid, a World of Foods and Quick Snacks.
- Spring Garden Club: Students design, plant and maintain the school garden. Lesson plans include: Be a Seed, Plant Parts, Variety Matters, Wiggly Worms, Soil Sleuths and Roots to Shoots.
