Green Mountain
Programs: gardening

In the Sprouts program, students design, plant, maintain, and harvest a school garden. All the produce from the garden goes to the school food program

A Typical Sprouts School Garden:

  • Designed entirely by students
  • Grows a wide variety of fruits and vegetables from purple carrots to pie pumpkins
  • Located centrally on school property and average 30’ x 40’
  • Produce an average of 350 lbs of produce for the school cafeteria
  • Might include a pole bean teepee, a sunflower house and a corn maze
"We serve all of the food from the school garden to our students. They are always eager to eat what they helped grow and now are more willing to try other new foods. The GMFTS staff has made sure we have all the recipes and equipment we need— making it easy for us to use the fresh garden food!"
