Green Mountain
About GMFTS: HISTORY

In 2005, the Jay/Westfield Joint Elementary School in Jay, VT launched a new school garden program to provide its students with nutrition and agriculture education. In 2007, this program grew into a pilot farm-to-school program operating at five schools in northern Vermont that built school gardens and provided more than 500 students with fresh local foods from more than 25 local farms. In 2008, the founding partners of the pilot program established Green Mountain Farm-to-School in order to replicate this successful program in other communities and to strengthen local food systems in Vermont. GMFTS currently serves fifteen school communities in the Northeast Kingdom with plans to expand statewide.

"Students love growing and eating vegetables from our school garden and participating in the program's fun, hands-on activities. GMFTS' experienced staff teaches a comprehensive curriculum and they provide all the materials and supplies needed. GMFTS makes it easy for us to have such a great program!"
