The need for improved child nutrition has never been greater. Researchers estimate that for the first time in American history, today's generation of children will live shorter lives than their parents, due to the health consequences of obesity. As one example of this, it is predicted that one third of all children born in 2000 or later will suffer from diabetes at some point in their lives. We are proud that our work in rural northern Vermont is part of the national effort to address the obesity epidemic.
GMFTS is addressing hunger and food insecurity in areas with the greatest need. In particular, we are now serving 85% of schools in Orleans County, Vermont, where 58% of students qualify for free or reduced price school breakfast or lunch.
By working in school cafeterias to offer a variety of fresh local foods, Green Mountain Farm-to-School provides a unique win-win opportunity to simultaneously improve the health of our children and support our local farms. Through nutrition and agriculture education, students can acquire the knowledge and skills they need to make healthy food choices.
